Application of Pattern Language for Game Design in Pedagogy and Design Practice

Existing implementations of game design patterns have largely been confined to theoretical or research settings. Weaknesses in these prevented from being properly evaluated as an educational and practical development tool. This paper examines weaknesses, describes a method developing applying that overcome the evaluates use for education practice. existing pattern are: omission problems, presumption functional completeness at level languages, narrow topical focus, lack concise, repeatable production. Several features proposed were specifically built address namely template, process connecting into language assessing language’s scope, rubric confidence interconnectivity confidence, pattern-building exercises. was applied classroom setting. Results assessed by evaluation student work suggest creating patterns/pattern languages is effective pedagogical approach. Designs produced using designer-created closely align with theory are clearly understood students. The above results may indicate path gaining wider acceptance framework within not produce universal language, but facilitate creation case-specific students professional designers shared ontology, thus can be combined easily solve diverse sets problems faced groups.
